The Executive Office of DECOC (Dynamique de l’Elite Congolaise de Corée du Sud) recently held a constructive and forward-looking meeting with Mr. Steven Sungyong Heo, CEO of Africa Insight. This encounter provided an opportunity to reflect on shared objectives and to explore avenues for collaboration in the months ahead.
Africa Insight is widely recognized for its annual Seoul–Africa Festival, a flagship event dedicated to cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Each edition of the festival attracts a vibrant community of African residents in South Korea, alongside representatives from various diplomatic missions. The festival has become a vital platform for showcasing Africa’s cultural diversity, fostering dialogue, and strengthening ties between African communities and Korean society.
During the meeting, DECOC emphasized its commitment to contributing meaningfully to this initiative. The discussion focused not only on how DECOC could increase its visibility but also on how it could actively participate in shaping the festival’s future. A central proposal advanced by DECOC was the recognition of participating organizations as co-organizers rather than mere guests. This approach would empower them to take ownership of the events, promote them more widely, and ensure that African cultures, particularly Congolese traditions, are represented with authenticity and pride.
By positioning organizations as co-creators, DECOC envisions a model of collaboration that extends beyond participation. It seeks to foster a dynamic environment where African communities in South Korea can collectively export their cultural heritage, engage with broader Korean society, and build bridges across diverse communities. Such a framework would not only elevate the profile of DECOC but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and impact of the Seoul–Africa Festival.
This meeting marks an important step toward strengthening cultural diplomacy and community engagement. Both DECOC and Africa Insight expressed optimism about the future of their partnership, underscoring the shared belief that cultural exchange is a powerful tool for unity, visibility, and mutual enrichment.
